Bulgarian cherry producers protesting

Producers of cherries from the region of Stara Zagora have protested against low prices. They have gathered on the Stara Zagora junction of the Trakia highway. The road is not blocked, but as a sign of dissatisfaction, demonstrators poured a few boxes of fruit on the ground. At noon, all the protesters gathered on the stretch that leads to the nearby village of Zagore.

The director of the Regional Police Directorate in Stara Zagora, Commissioner Georgi Hadzhiev, said that the protesters were notified they did not have permission to block the road.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Tsvetan Dimitrov spoke with the protesters. He explained that he was surprised by the protests. According to him, talks with cherry growers by the Ministry (together with experts) have been ongoing for more than a week.

According to an article on novinite.com, Dimitrov believes the protests are unfounded, but added that government support is only possible if the losses of producers are below the cost of production. Last year, such aid was received by producers whose plantations had frozen.
